Social media personality Gehgeh has sparked backlash and outrage after making remarks that many described as problematic about marriage traditions on the most recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast.
Concerning proposal culture, Gehgeh said African men should not go on their knees to propose to women; the practice is “un-African,” adding that men were “doing women a favour” since they chose to marry them.
When the moderators opposed his view, arguing that women also made big sacrifices in marriage, such as child-rearing and managing households, Gehgeh would not budge.
He says, for example, that men “don’t need marriage for anything,” adding that he did not need a woman “for anything” except to have children, which could happen without marriage or formal proposals. His comments have, since then, elicited hot reactions on various social media platforms. While many Nigerians felt he was being disrespectful and retrogressive, others rose in his support, arguing that he had simply expressed a conventional opinion about gender roles and marriage.
