ACJHR Commends INEC Chairman Amupitan for Credible Conduct of Anambra Governorship Election

The African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR) has commended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, for what it described as the “credible and transparent” conduct of the recently concluded Anambra State governorship election.

In a statement, the organisation said the election reflected significant improvement in Nigeria’s electoral process and showcased a renewed sense of institutional integrity under Professor Amupitan’s leadership.

“The Anambra governorship election was a clear reflection of improved electoral processes and a renewed spirit of institutional integrity under the leadership of Dr. Amupitan,” the statement read. “It indeed holds promises of better standards in the coming elections across the federation.”

The group added that INEC’s performance had restored public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, saying it demonstrated that “votes truly count and the will of the people prevails.”

ACJHR urged INEC to sustain the reforms that earned it renewed public trust, while calling on political actors, civil society organisations, and security agencies to continue supporting the Commission’s efforts to strengthen democratic governance.

“Sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is key to building on the progress recorded in Anambra,” the group stated.

Reports that the 2025 Anambra governorship election, supervised by INEC, saw Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) re-elected with 422,664 votes, winning all 21 local government areas. His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered 99,445 votes.

The poll has since drawn commendations from civil society groups, observers, and political stakeholders across the country.
