Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has won a ₦20 million judgment against an online news platform after a Federal High Court ruled in her favor in a defamation case.
The case, which dragged on for almost two years, began after the platform published a report falsely linking her to an alleged romantic relationship with Senator Dino Melaye.
The story, which listed her among “six Nigerian celebrities” said to be dating the politician, quickly went viral.
Feeling her name and image had been unfairly tarnished, Adunni Ade sued the outlet for defamation and invasion of privacy, demanding ₦100 million in damages.
On Tuesday, she took to Instagram to share the news of her victory, expressing gratitude to the Nigerian judiciary for upholding the truth.
“Won my case Adunni Ade vs. Polace Media Limited (www.naijanews.com). A false story was published about me, but truth stood tall,” she wrote.
“This judgment reaffirms that privacy matters and so does integrity. Justice delayed isn’t justice denied.”
She also revealed that the court awarded ₦20 million in her favor but noted humorously that the defendant had since fled.
“Judge granted ₦20 million in damages, but blogger don japa. Na to garnish account remain,” she joked in reply to a fan’s comment.
The actress hinted that this isn’t her only legal battle, revealing she has already won two out of several ongoing defamation cases.
She also urged journalists and bloggers to verify their information before publishing stories that could damage reputations.
