Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday announced the appointment of four senators to lead major standing committees in the upper chamber a move he says is aimed at strengthening the Senate’s oversight functions and improving its response to national challenges.
Senator Shehu Buba (APC, Bauchi) will now head the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, a committee expected to play an important role as Nigeria pushes for reforms in the livestock sector and seeks lasting solutions to recurring farmer–herder clashes.
Senator Abdullahi Yahaya (APC, Kebbi) was appointed chairman of the Committee on National Intelligence and National Security, placing him at the heart of legislative oversight of the nation’s security operations.
Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu) was named Acting Chairman of the Committee on Air Force, where he will oversee issues involving air operations and defence aviation.
Rounding off the list, Senator Musa Mustapha (APC, Yobe) was chosen to lead the Committee on National Planning, which plays a crucial part in shaping Nigeria’s development strategies and economic direction.
Akpabio said the new appointments are intended to improve efficiency and help the Senate respond more effectively to urgent national concerns, especially in security, economic planning, and agricultural reform.
