The governments of Akwa Ibom and Abia States have begun renewed efforts to end recurring clashes along their shared boundary, particularly between Itu Mbonuso in Ini LGA of Akwa Ibom and Atan Abam in Arochukwu LGA of Abia State.
Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, disclosed this during a visit to victims in Ikot Essien community, where several residents were recently abducted and injured in an attack linked to the Atan Abam community. She said Governor Umo Eno and Abia State Governor Alex Otti are already engaging in discussions aimed at resolving the longstanding conflict.
She assured that both states, along with security agencies, are working closely to restore peace. “His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, is committed to restoring peace and security in the area as investigations and talks are ongoing between security agencies in both Akwa Ibom and Abia States,” Offor said.
During the visit, the commissioner sponsored the medical treatment of the injured, provided financial assistance, and distributed relief materials including food items to displaced residents. She commended the people of Ikot Essien for avoiding reprisals, assuring them that justice would be served.
The victims expressed gratitude for her intervention, noting that her support made them feel the presence of government during their ordeal. The Village Head of Ikot Essien, Chief Emmanuel Essien, praised Offor for her compassion, while representatives of youths, men, and women thanked the commissioner and Governor Eno for prioritising peace.
They also expressed hope that the peace efforts would enable the return of farming and other economic activities stalled by the crisis.
