The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the mysterious deaths of a soldier and his wife at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State. The deceased soldier, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of 221 Battalion, was reportedly found dead along with his wife in their apartment on October 11, 2025.

In a report by Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the corpses were discovered in Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, sending the barracks into shock. Reports show that the soldier may have killed his wife prior to taking his own life.

Captain Nwankwo explained that the soldier was earlier on duty within the cantonment but had sought his officer’s approval to attend to personal matters before the ghastly accident occurred. He confirmed that the body of the couple remained intact as extensive investigations remain ongoing in a bid to establish all the facts under which they perished.

The Army extended sympathies to the victims’ families, relatives, and colleagues, and wished their souls rest.

Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commanding Officer of the 22 Armoured Brigade, vowed that the investigation would be comprehensive, with the report made available. He also stated that preventive measures would be taken so that a similar tragedy does not recur in the future.
