ASUU Rejects FG’s ₦50 Billion Fund Claim as “Fake News,” Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has firmly rejected claims by the Federal Government that ₦50 billion was released to revitalize Nigerian universities, calling the announcement misleading and untrue.

Prof. Jurbe Molwus, speaking on behalf of the union, made it clear that not a single federal university has received these promised funds.

He expressed frustration that key issues remain unresolved just days before ASUU‘s crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on November 8–9, 2025.

“The ₦50 billion revitalization fund the government announced weeks ago hasn’t reached any university.

We don’t understand why the Minister of Education is still holding onto it,” Prof. Molwus stated.

The union leader also challenged government claims that ₦2.3 billion had been paid to settle salary and promotion arrears.

According to him, no university staff member has received any payment or even a credit alert confirming such disbursements.

ASUU had previously suspended a two-week warning strike after receiving assurances from senior government officials that concrete steps would be taken to clear salary backlogs and other outstanding entitlements.

However, Prof. Molwus said those promises haven’t materialized.

“Our members need actual payments, not press releases,” he emphasized, highlighting the growing frustration among lecturers across the country.

The union is now demanding action on several unresolved issues, including withheld salaries, wage arrears, promotion arrears, and other benefits that have been pending for months.

Prof. Molwus issued a stern warning: the Federal Government has until November 21, 2025, to meet ASUU’s demands.
