Popular Yoruba actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has been released from prison after the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him, according to his fellow actor and close friend Yomi Fabiyi.
Fabiyi made the announcement on Friday through his Instagram handle, saying Baba Ijesha had “officially regained his freedom.” Baba Ijesha was convicted by a Lagos High Court on July 14, 2022, and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor, with the sentences running concurrently for a total of five years.
In April 2024, Baba Ijesha appealed the conviction; he was adamant that he had been set up. He explained that the actions, which the viral CCTV footage captured, were part of a “script” allegedly orchestrated by comedian Damilola Adekoya, also known as Princess and the minor’s foster mother. The case drew nationwide attention in 2021, sparking intense debate across Nollywood and social media.
Sharing a picture of the actor, Fabiyi wrote, “You are now officially FREE AND OUT. Baba Ijesha is not just back but BETTER,” as he celebrated the appellate court’s ruling.
Fabiyi further alleged that the court found no evidence of defilement and that a number of claims were made against individuals involved in the case. According to him, some manipulated the minor’s age, others acted out of personal vendetta, and tried to evade accountability despite accusations during investigation.
He also accused Princess of negligence and said medical tests conducted after Baba Ijesha’s arrest indicated sexual activity involving the minor, meaning the actor wasn’t responsible. As of the time of reporting, details of the Appeal Court judgment had not been formally released.
