The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said it has commenced a two-week nationwide warning strike following the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.
The President of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday that the strike came into effect at midnight on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
According to him, the strike is to compel the Federal Government to meet its long-standing agreements and address the problems that still beset Nigeria’s public universities.
ASUU had served a 14-day notice of September 28, 2025, after what it had described as the government’s insistence on ignoring and not addressing fundamental problems in the education sector.
ASUU National President Professor Piwuna declared that the decision to initiate the strike followed the failure of sustained efforts to bring the government to the negotiating table for meaningful engagements.
“Consequently, all the organs of ASUU are directed to withdraw their services effective from midnight 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike will be comprehensive and total as decided at the last NEC meeting,” he declared.
The action is the latest signal that operations in public universities are set for a severe disruption as the standoff between ASUU and the Federal Government again becomes more formidable.
