Ndidi Explains Osimhen’s Frustration After Super Eagles’ AFCON Win Over Tanzania
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has opened up on Victor Osimhen’s visible frustration following Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria secured all three points on Tuesday through goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, but the win came with a tense moment late in the game. Osimhen appeared unhappy after head coach Éric Chelle substituted him for Paul Onuachu, and cameras caught the striker exchanging words with the coach as he walked off the pitch. Speaking after the match, Ndidi played down suggestions of any serious issue, explaining that Osimhen’s reaction was driven by passion and his desire to help the team succeed. “I didn’t really see much of it, but it is what it is,” Ndidi said at the post-match press conference. “Victor is a big player. He always wants to give his best for the team, and maybe he felt frustrated at that moment.” The captain added that such emotions are natural, especially in high-pressure tournaments like AFCON. “We are human beings. Sometimes the game doesn’t go the way you expect, even when you’re trying your best for the team. That’s just who Osimhen is he always wants to be there and make a difference,” Ndidi explained. Ndidi also hinted that he would speak privately with the striker to help ease the pressure he puts on himself. “I think he’s putting too much pressure on himself because he really wants to win. I’ll talk to him. That’s the kind of hunger he has,” he said. As the Super Eagles continue their AFCON campaign, Ndidi’s comments highlight the strong bond within the squad and the importance of managing emotions alongside tactics. With unity and focus, Nigeria will be hoping to build on their opening win and push deeper into the tournament.
