The Ebonyi State Police Command on Friday arrested a middle-aged man, Mr. Chukwuma Onwe, for allegedly selling his five-day-old son for N1.5 million.
The suspect, from Nwezenyi-Igbeagu community in Izzi Local Government Area, was nabbed along with the purchaser, Mrs. Chinyere Ugochukwu, at the Azugwu area of Abakaliki, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, reported.
“Mr. Chukwuma Onwe sold his five-day-old baby for N1.5 million to Mrs. Chinyere Ugochukwu. The suspect and the buyer have been arrested and are currently in our custody,” SP Ukandu outlined.
He exposed that Onwe pretended to abduct the newborn baby from his wife, Mrs. Philomena Iroko, under the pretext of taking the baby to the hospital for treatment, and then sold him. He also tricked his wife into believing the baby had been handed over to his sister to mind him.
SP Ukandu confirmed that the baby has since been recovered from the buyer and returned to his biological mother, while investigations into the matter continue.
