Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have again clashed publicly following a heated exchange triggered by a controversial “thank-you” message Fayose sent after Obasanjo attended his 65th birthday celebration.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President disclosed that Fayose’s SMS intended as an appreciation message contained disparaging remarks. Obasanjo described it as “uncomplimentary” and said the tone of the message “undisguisedly revealed who and what” Fayose is, adding that the former governor remained “unchanged and unchangeable.”
Obasanjo replied Fayose with a brief, pointed response:
“Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are: unchanged and unchangeable. Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it unopened by me. Obj.”
Fayose’s original message accused Obasanjo of suffering from a “heightened stage of dementia” and criticised the remarks the former President made during the birthday celebration in Ibadan on Saturday.
Fayose’s message, as released by Akinyemi, read in part:
“Dear Baba Obasanjo, I trust this meets you well. Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate, except for your very irresponsible comments at your age. You went so low… Someone once said you are supposed to be kept away in the zoo. Sincerely, that’s where you belong.
“I kept quiet at the function so that the world will know the difference between a sane and a mad man that you are. It is obvious you have lost your sanity or are in the heightened stage of dementia. Not to worry, Baba, I shall set the records straight in due course.
“Lastly, I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it… Your leopard will never change its skin.”
The exchange has reignited long-standing tensions between the two political figures, marking yet another episode in their history of public confrontations.
