IGP Egbetokun: Misinformation Damaging Public Trust in Police

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has raised concerns over what he described as a surge in misinformation targeted at undermining the image and work of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the IGP, false information often spread through social media has become a powerful tool used to mislead the public and paint the police in a negative light. He noted that old videos are frequently recirculated as if they are new, images are doctored to appear authentic, and entire narratives are sometimes fabricated to provoke outrage.

Egbetokun said the Nigeria Police has become the biggest casualty of this trend, as such manipulations distort public understanding and fuel unnecessary distrust.

He emphasised the need for Nigerians to verify information before sharing, stressing that misinformation not only harms the police but also threatens national security and social stability.
