South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, says he is unbothered by any move to bar him from entering the United States, insisting that Africa remains his true home.
Speaking at a public event, Malema declared that he would rather travel across African countries than worry about visiting Western nations.
“Even if America decides that I should no longer enter, it’s okay. I will enter Zimbabwe, I will enter Botswana, I will enter Nigeria. I will enter Africa, my home,” he said.
The outspoken opposition figure dismissed the appeal of Western countries, joking that he would prefer Nigerian jollof rice and goat pepper soup to American fast food.
“Why should I be concerned about people who are going to feed me burgers and make me fat when I can go to Nigeria and eat jollof rice with goat pepper soup?” he asked.
Malema, a long-time critic of Western influence in African politics, argued that the US is often uncomfortable with African nations asserting independence.
“When we do that, it is usually against America’s interests. It will never like that. But are we going to retreat because America doesn’t want us to? Never,” he stated.
Recalling a recent visit to Nigeria, he spoke fondly of the hospitality he received.
“When we were in Nigeria, we were given nice jollof rice and pepper soup by the governor of Enugu State. Africa is so warm that even when I’m sweating, I won’t stop enjoying it,” he said.
Malema concluded that threats of denying him visas to the US or UK do not concern him.
“So you want to threaten me that you won’t give me a visa to America or London? I don’t care,” he declared.
