Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives have exposed and demolished a clandestine mineral warehousing network that exists within the Onne axis in Rivers State.
The operation, which was undertaken on the strength of reliable intelligence, was effected by the NSCDC Mining Marshals jointly with members of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals staff. In a release attributed to the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, CSC Babawale Afolabi, it was stated that the enforcement team, spearheaded by DSC Emmanuel Abiahu, raided warehouses where mined minerals were being kept without valid permits, licences, or evidence of payment of royalties to the federal government.
Afolabi added that such illegal operations not only erode the national economy but also pose seriously damaging dangers to the environment and community safety around it.
He added that the operation was carried out in line with the directive of the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, who has always emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s solid mineral resources and advocating for an open, well-governed mining sector.
Prof. Audi warned that operators in the country must comply with the legal requirements or face drastic enforcement measures. He reaffirmed the Corps’ determination in the protection of lives, livelihoods, and the environment through the exercise of constant vigilance and collaboration with the affected stakeholders.
The NSCDC equally invited the public to partner with the security agencies by giving them credible information in order to halt illegal mining and ensure that the natural resources of Nigeria benefit Nigeria and Nigerians.
