Oluremi Tinubu Tells Nigerians to Stop “Badmouthing” the Country, Says Corruption Tag Is Gone

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to show more pride in their country and stop speaking negatively about it, claiming the nation has shed its old image as one of the world’s most corrupt.

Speaking during a two-day visit to Gombe State on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Mrs. Tinubu addressed residents and traditional leaders, including the Emir of Akko, HRH Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku.

“Calling on us as Nigerians, stop badmouthing your nation. Gone are the days when they say Nigeria is the most corrupt country. You won’t hear that again,” she said confidently.

The First Lady pointed to what she described as renewed global interest in Nigeria, sharing her own experiences abroad.

“Even when I go abroad, when they hear you’re from Nigeria, everybody’s interested. They want to come to Nigeria. Nigeria is the next destination,” she remarked.

Mrs. Tinubu also praised Gombe’s scenic landscapes, comparing them to the English countryside, and urged Nigerians to appreciate the beauty and potential within their own borders.

“We have to be proud. Your landscape is beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like that. You see that in the London countryside, but I’m seeing it here in Gombe and in other states too,” she added.

Her comments have created debate on social media.

While some praised her patriotism and positive outlook, others questioned whether corruption and governance challenges have truly been left behind, pointing to ongoing issues across the country.

During her Gombe visit, Mrs. Tinubu also attended the state’s Health Summit and received a traditional title from the Lamido of Akko.
