Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has been arrested by security operatives at the Federal High Court in Abuja, moments after greeting detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, who organized the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in the capital, was picked up Thursday inside the court premises following a brief exchange with Kanu.
Sources say the arrest is linked to last week’s protest demanding Kanu’s unconditional release.
That demonstration was met with a heavy security crackdown, protesters were teargassed, and several people were detained, including Kanu’s lawyer Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Emmanuel Kanu, and about 11 other activists.
Eyewitnesses say Sowore actually escaped arrest during the protest itself, slipping away as security agents fired teargas to break up the crowd.
But during Thursday’s court hearing for Kanu’s terrorism trial, Sowore showed up at the courthouse. Shortly after he greeted Kanu, security operatives moved in and took him into custody.
