The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has called on political and community leaders in the South-West to drop party politics and focus on protecting the region from rising security threats.
Speaking during a recent interview, the traditional ruler said monarchs across the region are fully behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to tackle insecurity in Nigeria.
Oba Ogunwusi warned against politicizing security issues, saying it only weakens the country’s ability to stay united and safe.
“God has brought our leader, President Bola Tinubu, to lead us,” he said. “Traditional leaders are not talking about politics; we are talking about how to save our people and our race. That is way beyond politics.”
He emphasized the importance of working together, pointing out that traditional rulers are closer to local communities and often have better access to early intelligence on emerging threats.
The Ooni revealed that intelligence reports show dangerous groups are trying to infiltrate the South-West.
In response, traditional institutions are reinforcing local security networks using methods rooted in the region’s history.
Hunters and forest guards are now playing a key role in protecting rural and vulnerable areas.
“Yes, we have discovered that, and that’s the truth,” he said.
“We are enforcing and strengthening our local guards; we are very strong. We have intelligence information.
They are coming closer to us, and we’re going to send them back.”
Oba Ogunwusi reassured the public that the South-West’s long history of resilience and unity will continue to protect its people from any threat.
