Nigerian football sensation Victor Osimhen has been nominated for the 2025 CAF African Player of the Year award. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the nominees on its official X account on Wednesday.

Osimhen, who received the award in 2023 following his efforts in guiding Napoli to their first Serie A title in 40 years, will face Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy, and Cameroon’s Frank Anguissa.

Other possible winners include Senegal’s Pape Matar Sarr (Tottenham Hotspur), DR Congo/Pyramids FC’s Fiston Mayele, Senegal/Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, Gabon/LAFC’s Denis Bouanga, and Morocco/RS Berkane’s Oussama Lamlioui. Surprisingly, the winner of this year, Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, did not make it to the 2025 shortlist.

In other categories, the Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was shortlisted for the 2025 CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award, while the Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi was shortlisted for the Young Player of the Year award. Bameyi led Nigeria into the round of 16 at the just concluded FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
