The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly dismissed suggestions of installing a caretaker committee, insisting that the party’s national convention must proceed as scheduled to elect new national officers.
BoT chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, made this known in a statement distancing the board from a report attributed to its Reconciliation Committee, which proposed a caretaker arrangement should the convention fail to hold. Wabara clarified that the report does not represent the official position of the BoT and has neither been discussed nor adopted.
He stressed that the board is fully committed to the elective national convention scheduled for Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. According to him, the BoT’s position aligns with the Supreme Court’s affirmation of a political party’s supremacy in conducting its internal affairs.
“In that regard, the BoT rejects any suggestion for a Caretaker Committee for the Party,” Wabara stated. “Such an idea cannot be contemplated. The PDP has irreversibly decided on an elective National Convention, which falls squarely within its internal jurisdiction beyond the reach of the courts.”
Wabara urged party members nationwide to remain focused on ensuring the success of the Ibadan convention.
The statement follows a report submitted by a six-man BoT Reconciliation Committee, which recommended an all-inclusive caretaker committee due to the legal uncertainties surrounding the convention. The committee had warned that multiple court rulings some halting the convention and another allowing it might deter the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring the exercise.
The committee’s report, submitted Thursday and later presented to PDP governors and stakeholders, highlighted deep-seated mistrust and prolonged friction among key actors, including governors, the National Working Committee (NWC), and other party leaders.
Members of the reconciliation team included Amb. Hassan Adamu (Chairman), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Dr. Mike Oghiadomhe (Secretary), Senator Zaynab Kure, Dr. Lubna Gusau, and Chief Ugochukwu Okeke. They met with PDP governors, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, NWC members, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki during their consultations.
Despite the committee’s recommendations, the BoT has now made its stance clear: the convention must hold, and the party will elect new leaders in Ibadan this weekend.
