Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has fired back at critics who called his supporters “street urchins” and “low-class Nigerians,” saying such language reveals how far the nation has fallen.
In a statement posted on X, Obi didn’t mince words about the recent attacks on his followers, known as Obidients.
He called out the troubling trend of Nigerians belittling each other based on social status.
“I’ve been hearing people dismiss those who support me as low-class, even calling them street urchins with no value,” Obi wrote.
“It’s sad that we’ve reached a point where Nigerians look down on their own people like this.”
The former Anambra governor made it clear where he stands: “I’ve never looked down on anyone, except to lift them up. We only rise by lifting others.”
Obi explained that his politics has always been about everyday Nigerians, not rubbing shoulders with the elite. “I didn’t get into politics to hang out with the so-called high and mighty.
I’m here for ordinary people whose voices have been silenced and whose resources have been stolen by those same ‘big names’ who now walk around with fancy titles.”
He pushed back hard against the idea that any Nigerian is worthless: “No Nigerian has no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin.
The fact that our leaders can call struggling citizens these names shows how broken things have become.”
Obi challenged political leaders to show some humanity instead of mocking people who are barely getting by. “Every Nigerian deserves dignity, opportunity, and care.
That’s why I’ll keep fighting to give ordinary people better access to education, healthcare, and real pathways out of poverty.”
He wrapped up with a simple but powerful message: “Real leadership isn’t about mocking the weak, it’s about lifting them up. A New Nigeria is possible.”
