Political commentator Reno Omokri has stirred controversy by suggesting that voting for Peter Obi in 2027 would lead to a presidential pardon for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Taking to his X account, Omokri, a known supporter of President Bola Tinubu, issued a stark warning to Nigerian voters: “If you vote for Peter Obi as either President or Vice President in 2027, you are automatically voting for a Presidential pardon for Nnamdi Kanu!”

The statement has ignited fierce debate on social media, with Nigerians divided over whether the claim is politically motivated or a legitimate concern ahead of the next election cycle.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the judgment after an hour-long session, convicting Kanu on all terrorism charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The judge chose life imprisonment over the death penalty, citing appeals for clemency from various quarters.

He also expressed concerns about security at Kuje Prison, directing that Kanu be held in any fortified correctional facility across Nigeria.

According to the ruling, Kanu’s activities, including threats, killings, and the enforcement of sit-at-home orders across the South-East, amounted to acts of terrorism.

While additional sentences were imposed on counts three and seven, they will run concurrently with the life sentence.
