The House of Representatives has decided to intervene in the current division between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a move to end the current industrial action that is disrupting academic activities across the country.
The resolution came after a motion moved on Tuesday by Hon. Sesi Whingan, member of Lagos State Badagry Federal Constituency, in plenary. The intervention was to end the crisis, following which ASUU embarked on two-week notice strike from Monday after its 14-day ultimatum expired.
Some of the demands made by ASUU are the completion and enforcement of the renegotiated 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, payment of arrears and backlog salaries, university sustainable funding, and revitalization of public tertiary institutions.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, reports that the government did not take steps on the recommendations of the Yayale Ahmed-headed renegotiation committee set up in 2024, adding that the Education Minister only acknowledged receipt months after submission.
In turn, the Minister of Education reportedly instructed the vice-chancellors of universities to enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy and monitor lecturers on strike.
The strike, the first countrywide strike by ASUU in nearly three years, has already interrupted ongoing examinations as well as academic schedules in some universities across the country.
