President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, making a personal donation of N200 million to support the initiative.

Speaking ahead of the annual January 15 commemoration, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes and supporting serving troops who continue to battle terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats. He described Remembrance Day as a solemn reminder of the price paid to preserve the nation’s unity and peace.

Tinubu praised the courage and resilience of the Armed Forces, noting that their sacrifices have helped stabilize communities and strengthen national security. “As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve,” he said, adding that the bravery of troops on the frontlines remains a source of pride for all Nigerians.

He highlighted significant military gains across various operations, including the reclaiming of territories, restoration of normalcy in once-violent areas, and improved coordination among security agencies. These efforts, he noted, have led to the surrender of thousands of insurgents, the elimination of key terrorist leaders and the rescue of numerous captives.

The President also revealed improvements in maritime security, citing reduced oil theft, piracy and illegal fishing, supported by enhanced naval operations and the acquisition of modern platforms for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Tinubu announced that the Ministry of Defence is developing a new programme to reclaim ungoverned spaces by engaging retired military personnel. The initiative aims to restore government presence, strengthen security in vulnerable areas and transform previously unsafe zones into centres of economic activity.

A new feature added to this year’s remembrance activities is the “Thank a Soldier” QR-code platform, introduced by the Ministry of Defence. The platform will allow Nigerians at home and abroad to send messages of appreciation to serving troops, a development Tinubu said would boost digital engagement and encourage youth participation.

The President urged Nigerians to wear the 2026 emblem with pride, describing it as a symbol of sacrifice, honour and national gratitude. He called on citizens to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace unity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel through better allowances, barracks renovation, enhanced healthcare and more transparent pension verification via BVN and NIN integration.

At the event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio donated N100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, contributed N20 million. The ceremony was attended by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, ministers, lawmakers, service chiefs, intelligence heads and leaders of paramilitary agencies.
