President Bola Tinubu has pushed back hard against accusations that Christians are being systematically killed in Nigeria, calling the claims “false and dangerous.”
According to report, while speaking Friday at a NASFAT conference in Abuja through Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, Tinubu made his position crystal clear: Nigeria isn’t experiencing religious genocide, it’s battling terrorism fueled by criminals and extremists who don’t discriminate by faith.
“These allegations are not only false but dangerous,” the President said. “They are capable of inflaming passions and undermining the peaceful coexistence we are striving to build as a nation.”
Tinubu emphasized that both Christians and Muslims have lost lives to terrorist attacks, and neither group is being targeted because of their religion.
He stressed that Nigeria doesn’t promote or tolerate persecution of any faith community.
“Muslims and Christians alike have been victims of terrorism in Nigeria, and they stand together in condemning violence in all its forms,” he stated firmly.
The President’s comments come on the heels of Donald Trump’s recent claims that Christians face targeted killings in Nigeria.
The U.S. president went as far as threatening potential military intervention and labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for alleged religious persecution.
But Tinubu pointed to historical grievances, economic struggles, and organized crime as the real drivers of insecurity, not religious intolerance.
“As President, and with full respect for the Constitution, I state clearly that there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria, and there is no Muslim genocide in Nigeria,” Tinubu declared, adding that his government is working around the clock to tackle the security challenges facing all Nigerians, regardless of their faith.
