President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as his choice for new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The nomination was sent in the form of a letter to the Senate and read on Tuesday’s plenary by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Tinubu explained the appointment was made in accordance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“I am pleased to submit for approval by the Senate the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” the President’s letter partially read.
He also included the nominee’s curriculum vitae and asked the upper house to grant the appointment its usual speed consideration.
Upon reading the letter, Senator Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration and scrutiny, to be scheduled at a later date before final confirmation in plenary.
