President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate, requesting them to screen and confirm the newly promoted Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Service Chiefs.
The letter, which was read on Tuesday by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio in plenary, nominated the following: General Olufemi Oluyede (Chief of Defence Staff), Major-General Waheedi Shaibu (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral Idi Abbas (Chief of Naval Staff), Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke (Chief of Air Staff), and Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye (Chief of Defence Intelligence).
Akpabio then referred the nominations to the Senate Committee of the Whole for vetting and approval next week.
The nomination came on the heels of a recent reorganization in the military hierarchy, where President Tinubu appointed General Oluyede to replace General Christopher Musa as CDS. Major-General Undiendeye, however, stood as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Presidential aide Sunday Dare said the appointments were part of the government’s ongoing process of strengthening Nigeria’s national security system, and went on to say that “all appointments take immediate effect.”
