Traditional Thrones Outlive Politics, Says VP Shettima as He Reaffirms FG’s Support for Royal Institutions

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to protecting and preserving Nigeria’s traditional institutions, describing them as the backbone of grassroots leadership and custodians of cultural continuity.

Shettima made the remarks on Friday at the 45th anniversary celebration of the Emir of Gumel, HRH Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani II, held alongside the commissioning of the Gumel Central Mosque in Jigawa State.

Speaking through a statement issued by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President noted that while political office holders serve a limited tenure, traditional rulers hold enduring roles that anchor communities across generations.

“The tenure of every elective office holder ends after eight years, but the traditional institutions remain. Therefore, we must respect them, take care of them, and preserve as well as protect the institution,” he said.

Shettima congratulated the Emir of Gumel on his 45 years on the throne, praying for continued good health and a long reign. He highlighted the Emirate’s rich history, founded in 1750, and praised the Emir’s distinguished career in public service before ascending the throne as the 13th Emir.

The Vice President also commended the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, describing him as a symbol of national unity whose constant engagement across the country strengthens social cohesion.

He further applauded Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi for cultivating 10,000 hectares of wheat an achievement he said surpasses the combined output of 18 northern states.

Earlier, Governor Namadi expressed gratitude to Shettima for honouring the state’s invitation, noting that the Vice President’s presence underscored the administration’s support for Jigawa’s development.

The Sultan of Sokoto, who also spoke at the event, preached unity, tolerance, and respect among Nigerians, commending both the Emir and the Vice President for their devotion to peace and the protection of traditional heritage.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and eminent personalities from across the country.
