Two years after the brutal killing of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student Justina Otuene, a court has sentenced her ex-boyfriend, Damian Chinaemerem Okoligwe, to death by hanging.
According to report, Justina, a 20-year-old Biochemistry student, went missing in October 2023 after visiting Okoligwe’s apartment in Ozuoba, Rivers State.
Her dismembered body was later found by police, sparking national outrage and calls for justice.
On Friday, after months of hearings and witness testimonies, the court convicted the 400-level student and handed down the maximum sentence under the law.
Lead prosecutor Charles Mbaba welcomed the ruling, saying it brought long-awaited closure to Justina’s family.
“Justice has been done and is seen and felt to be done in respect of Justina Otuene,” he said.
“Justina was the only daughter of her parents but was gruesomely murdered by Damian in circumstances suggestive of ritual intentions. We hope her soul can now rest in peace.”
Mbaba also said the verdict should serve as a warning to young people chasing quick wealth through dangerous means, adding that such shortcuts often lead to tragedy.
