Wike Bans Phones for Junior Staff at Abuja Land Offices After Viral Confrontation Video

Nyesome Wike.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has banned mobile phones for junior government workers at key Abuja offices, a move many believe is linked to recent viral videos showing him in a heated clash with a naval officer.

According to report, the directive, effective from Wednesday, November 12, 2025, targets staff at the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and Department of Land Administration who are on Salary Grade Level 14 and below.

According to a memo signed by AGIS Head Chijioke Nwankwoeze, affected employees are now prohibited from bringing their phones into office premises.

The policy is officially aimed at “maintaining discipline and information security.”

The ban comes just days after videos went viral showing Minister Wike in a public confrontation with a naval officer over disputed property in Gaduwa District, Abuja.

Sources within AGIS told Sahara Reporters that Wike was reportedly frustrated by how quickly the footage spread online.

In the widely-shared incident, the minister accused the officer of illegally guarding a construction site allegedly connected to a former Chief of Naval Staff.

Civil servants have criticized the policy as “impractical and counterproductive,” pointing out that phones are essential for official communication and emergencies.

Many are calling on the FCT administration to reverse the decision.
