2026 WCQ: FIFA Awards Lesotho 3-0 Win, Fines South Africa for Fielding Ineligible Player

FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the South African Football Association (SAFA) for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during their March 21, 2025 World Cup qualifier match against Lesotho.

In a statement released on Monday, FIFA ruled that SAFA violated Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Preliminary Competition Regulations.

Consequently, the match has been forfeited to Lesotho on a 3-0 score. SAFA was also fined CHF 10,000 (about $12,541) and Mokoena was cautioned.

The decision, appealable in 10 days, has reshuffled Group C of the African qualifiers. Benin and South Africa top the group with 14 points, followed closely by Rwanda and Nigeria with 11 points each.
