Governor of Cross River State Bassey Otu marked his 66th birthday in a touching ceremony where over 7,000 widows showed up at the state library complex, Calabar. The event, which was marked by gratitude and joy, showed the governor’s continued dedication to less fortunate groups in the state.
Governor Otu, while addressing the crowd, showed deep appreciation for the contribution of women in society and valued how their support had been instrumental in making his government a success. He warned against extorting money from widows in market stalls and vowed to institute a complaint system such that whoever is caught doing this is compelled to refund the stolen money.
During the speech, the widow leader, Mrs. Uduak Spencer, appreciated the governor’s generosity and acceptability, referring to him as a unique leader who cares about the welfare of widows.
Mrs. Felicia Eyaba, another widow, was overwhelmed with tears of happiness, stating, “Widows are the least remembered in society, yet here you are celebrating with us. You have done well.”.
The event was one of thanks and celebration, highlighting Governor Otu’s people-centered approach to governance and commitment to bringing up the underprivileged.
