Injured but Triumphant: Naomi Osaka Battles Through Pain to Reach Japan Open Quarterfinals

Naomi Osaka showed a lot of determination in making it to the Japan Open quarterfinals after defeating defending champion Suzan Lamens in a hard-fought match. The victory was possible despite Osaka not being able to play comfortably throughout the game due to pain in her left leg.

Competing in her own grass court tournament for the first time in three years, the four Grand Slam title winner demonstrated grit and determination as she fought through agony to seal the victory within two hours and twenty minutes.

Osaka, who was leading 5–0 in the decisive set, called for a medical break and was treated on her left leg before continuing with extensive strapping. Though she dropped the next two games, she was able to win the match and advance to the quarterfinals.

After hitting a decisive backhand winner, the former world No. 1 appeared emotional, covering her face as tears welled up while walking to the net.

“It was definitely really difficult. I’m somewhat sorry about my attitude,” Osaka admitted during an on-court interview that was cut short due to her injury.

The 27-year-old, who went to the semifinals at the previous US Open after losing to Amanda Anisimova, is hoping her comeback does not end soon as she seeks to capture her first major title since winning the Australian Open in 2021.
