The Federal Ministry of Environment, through the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) in collaboration with RecycleStack, has launched the National Waste Marketplace Programme (NWMP) a digital initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s waste streams into economic assets and promoting a sustainable circular economy.
At the sensitisation workshop and official unveiling of the programme in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal described the NWMP as a practical step towards modernising Nigeria’s waste management system while integrating circular economy principles into national policy.
According to the Minister, NWMP is an innovative digital platform meant to formalise the country’s waste value chain by connecting waste generators, collectors, aggregators, and recyclers with end-users through a transparent and traceable system.
Lawal further explained that this initiative will tap into technology to create economic linkages in the chain of recycling while pursuing environmental compliance, material recovery, and sustainable consumption patterns.
According to him, “The NWMP goes beyond technology; it embodies a vision of a Nigeria where waste management becomes a driver of innovation, youth empowerment, and green enterprise.
He said the programme aligns with the Extended Producer Responsibility Framework put in place by NESREA, where producers, recyclers, collectors, and consumers all have defined roles in protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
