Abia Court Fines 73 for Violating Monthly Sanitation Law in Umuahia

A Mobile Environmental Sanitation Court sitting in Abia State capital Umuahia has fined 73 individuals for violating the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The enforcement was conducted during the July edition of the exercise, which took place last Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The offenders were arrested at different points in the capital city. Eleven others were freed by the presiding magistrate, O.C. Ibekwe, on legal, health, and compassionate grounds. Speaking after the exercise, the state Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and compliance level, noting that it reflects  the public’s alignment with Governor Alex Otti’s “Clean and Green” vision for the state.

Special Governor’s Envoy on Environment, Ijeoma Iheukwumere, also called for greater involvement in subsequent sanitation exercises.
