Afenifere Leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo Passes Away at 96

Prominent Yoruba elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. He died peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State. His family confirmed the news in an official statement.

Pa Adebanjo, a respected lawyer and former Organizing Secretary of the Action Group, was a fearless advocate for democracy, justice, and good governance throughout his life. As Afenifere’s national leader, he played a pivotal role in championing Yoruba interests and promoting national unity.

He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In their statement, his family described him as a man of unwavering principles who remained dedicated to the fight for a better Nigeria.

“We will always treasure his commitment to truth, equity, and justice.

He dedicated his life to the struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria, a cause he pursued until his final breath,” the statement read.

Consultations are ongoing with his associates, friends, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond to plan a befitting farewell. Further details will be announced in due course. A condolence register has been opened at his residence in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, and at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
