Sunday Kelvin Aneke was born on February 20, 1972, in Makurdi, Benue State. He hails from the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. He is the son of Air Warrant Officer (Rtd) Sylvester and Mrs. Ngozi Aneke. His educational career began at Army Children School, Kaduna, and later at Government College, Kaduna, before he was enlisted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 40th Regular Combatant Course. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on the 10th of September, 1993.
Aneke is a renowned scholar and strategist with B.Sc. Physics, Postgraduate Diploma in Management, University of Calabar, and two Master’s Degrees—International Affairs and Diplomacy (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria) and Political Economy and Development Studies (University of Abuja). Additionally, he holds a Professional Certificate in Aviation Safety Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida, and is further pursuing a PhD, reflective of his passion for knowledge-based leadership.
During his distinguished career, AVM Aneke has been trained at the leading military colleges, including the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the United States Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, from which he graduated with a Master’s in Strategic Studies. His past appointments include Director of Policy, Director of Safety, Deputy Director of Operations, Command Operations Officer, Deputy Commandant of the NDA, and Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, Yenagoa.
A highly experienced pilot with over 4,359 flight hours, Aneke is type-rated on a variety of aircraft, including the Air Beetle 18, Dornier 228, Falcon 900, and Gulfstream 550. His operational experience features local operations such as Operation Restore Hope in the Niger Delta and international peacekeeping under the United Nations MONUC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Bedecked in a diverse range of awards GSS, DSS, GSM, FCM, Psc, MSc, MIAD, MPEDS, and USAFWC AVM Aneke is greatly known for his professionalism, humility, and visionary thinking.
His October 24, 2025, appointment as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff heralds a new dawn for the Nigerian Air Force one of innovation, intelligence-led operations, and enhanced airpower projection.
Married to Mrs. Ngozi Enderline Aneke, and blessed with three sons namely Chukwuebuka Kelvin, Ifeanyichukwu Brian, and Uchechukwu Jason, AVM Aneke epitomizes the very best of the Nigerian Air Force traditions of discipline, valour, and excellence as he navigates the Service into a new era of strategic reformation and national security advancement.
