ALGON Kwara State Elects New Executives After Five Years of Inactivity

After five years of dormancy, the Kwara State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has elected new executives to oversee its activities. The association had been inactive since 2019, following the suspension of local government chairmen and councillors by the state House of Assembly, which led to a prolonged legal battle.

During the five-year tenure of the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) that replaced the suspended officials, ALGON was not constituted. However, the election of new local government chairmen in September 2024 paved the way for ALGON’s revival.

In the newly conducted election, Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar, chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, was elected as ALGON Chairman. Other elected officials include Hon. Nuhu Podo (Vice Chairman), Hon. Jolayemi Benjamin (Secretary), Hon. Sheu Ladan (Treasurer), Hon. Abdullahi Bello (Financial Secretary), and Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf (Public Relations Officer).

According to a statement by Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, the election was conducted with the participation of all 16 local government chairmen in Kwara State, ensuring a smooth and transparent process. Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar congratulated the newly elected executives and emphasized the importance of collaboration among members to foster unity and support the current administration’s goals effectively.
