Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has imposed a ban on protests and other activities within and around court premises until further notice, warning that violators will face legal action. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia clarified that the only court-related activities permitted would be local government election petition tribunal sittings, given their time-sensitive nature.
The governor highlighted that courts in Benue State have been shut since December 6, 2024, due to the ongoing Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) strike.
“All individuals and groups are directed to refrain from carrying out any form of activity within or around the court premises until further notice,” Alia stated.
Security measures have been put in place to protect tribunal members, petitioners, legal representatives, and witnesses, ensuring that proceedings are conducted without interference. Additionally, the ban covers unauthorised gatherings, protests, and commercial activities such as hawking around the court premises.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to the judiciary and the rule of law, urging the public to remain calm and patient while awaiting the tribunal’s decisions. He assured residents that his administration is focused on enhancing security and maintaining peace across the state.
