Monogramming: The Booming Business Redefining Nigeria’s Menswear Industry

Monogramming is also fast becoming one of Nigeria’s most profitable trends in the menswear market, integrating tradition, status, and personalization into a thriving fashion trend. The practice of embroidering initials or insignias on fabric has become a money-making venture for designers and entrepreneurs across West Africa. From politicians and top executives to grooms and young professionals, style-conscious Nigerian men are taking up personalised monograms on traditional Agbada sleeves, starched shirt cuffs, jackets, caps, and loungewear. The embellishments have become symbols of identity, class, and good taste. According to Mr. Taiwo Olaleye, Managing Director of Taye Dates Fashion, monograms have moved beyond an elite luxury. “From Kano weddings to Lagos boardrooms, monograms are now mainstream personal branding,” he noted. The heightened demand has spawned various business opportunities. While some businessmen and women work with freelance professional designers to handle custom orders, others put money in specialized monogram studios that utilize professional embroidery machines. Though start-up capital can be heavy, the margins are often substantial as well. Olaleye also opined that monogramming could be a standalone business or a value addition at the high end for fashion brands that can allow them to charge more due to the value addition. Ready-made monogrammed products such as caps, bags, and polos with fashionable initials also promise the potential of quick sales and wider market acceptance. Financial Outlook New entrants must be aware of the financial commitments. Hand or machine embroidery training requires ₦50,000 to ₦200,000. Monthly operational expenses of threads, stabilisers, and other consumables can reach ₦100,000 to ₦200,000. Good planning and market positioning will render monogramming both creatively fulfilling and lucrative in Nigeria’s burgeoning fashion industry.

Senator Tinubu spoke at the flag-off of the initiative in Jalingo, Taraba State on Thursday and said the right tools and infrastructure were also being provided. While commending the efforts and commitment of the midwives and the entire health workforce, Senator Tinubu said their effort is still key to realizing the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria. “I am informed that 59,570 health workers have so far been trained and that is the reason why the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) procured 60,000 branded scrubs and 60,000 pairs of crocs, as an incentive to encourage and support the relentless dedication of our midwives,” the first lady clarified. She urged Nigerians to keep encouraging health workers for their round-the-clock work, especially the sector’s leadership. Mrs Tinubu commended the Coordinating Minister of Health and Official Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, and their staff for their dedicated efforts at improving healthcare delivery to the citizens. She referred to this as one of the main pillars of development under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu. “All six geopolitical zones will receive 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 pairs of crocs, which will be distributed among the states in each zone,” she said. RHI, since its inception in 2023, has provided focused interventions in agriculture, economic empowerment, education, health and social investment to improve the lives of Nigerian families, the first lady said. “RHI realizes that the health profession requires not only skills and compassion, but also the right tools and kits to inspire our Midwives as they serve others. Thank you for all your good work,” she stated. She also announced a N50million Business Re-capitalisation grant for 1,000 petty traders in the state with Governor Agbu Kefas pledging to match this with another 1,000 petty traders. Governor Kefas, in his address, noted that the nation is witnessing huge transformation in the health sector that is gradually, but purposefully increasing life expectancy and other outcomes in the sector. He commended the First Lady for her sheer willpower and determination to improve the life of the average Nigerian through the tangible activities of the RHI. In his turn, the Prof Pate assured that the Federal Government is doing all it can to close the gap in access and affordability of healthcare, especially to pregnant women and mothers. He assured the nurses and midwives that their services are valued by the Tinubu administration and urged them to carry out their assignments with excellence.
