Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has thrown down the gauntlet to Peter Obi, challenging the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate to contest the 2027 election solo, without clinging to Atiku Abubakar’s coattails.
In a social media post that has set Nigerian social media ablaze, Adeyanju made it clear he doesn’t want to see Obi taking what he called the “easy way out” by becoming Atiku’s running mate.
“Obi must be on the ballot in 2027; I want to check something. It’s Obi or nothing in 2027. He must not get the easy way out by becoming Atiku’s deputy.
He can do it all by himself with his obidient mob. Go Ekuke FC, go,” Adeyanju wrote.
The jab at Obi’s passionate supporters, often called the “Obidient movement”, didn’t go unnoticed.
The reactions came swift and savage.
Toba Popoola dragged up old receipts: “The same way you said you would trek from Abuja to Kano if he got one million votes in 2023.”
Godswill Chigozie went straight for the jugular: “If them born Deji well make him mention Peter Obi again. The fear of court cases is the beginning of your learning… Mumu charge and bail lawyer.”
Not everyone was hostile though. Osamudia defended Obi’s chances: “You think say Nigerians get time for other politicians? A free and fair election devoid of rigging, Obi will win before 2pm.”
Others questioned Adeyanju’s motives entirely.
Paul Store called him a “social media lawyer” and a “temu lawyer,” while Timothy Aja hinted at political opportunism: “I’m getting confused if this is Reno Omokri’s page or not… Deji looking for appointment from Tinubu.”
Even Adeyanju’s allies weren’t spared. Dojumu wrote: “Even Sowore your friend will shake his head for you with all these things you write… A lawyer talking like this?”
