Publisher-turned-politician Bashorun Dele Momodu has lambasted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, labeling the move an opposition politics betrayal and a direct boost to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
In a statement on Tuesday, Momodu accused the PDP of succumbing to internal sabotage and external pressures from die-hard members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Yesterday, one of Africa’s biggest, but seriously embattled, political parties shot itself in the leg by choosing to hide behind one finger. The PDP finally succumbed to the cheap and puerile blackmail of the black sheep in the opposition party who are openly and daringly working for the ruling party,” he wrote.
Momodu credited the zoning to the former Governor of Rivers State and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and blamed it as being done under a scheme to make Tinubu return in 2027.
“Who did not know that ultimately the hand belonged to Wike and the voice to Tinubu? Their gameplan is no longer a secret. Wike goes on to burp orders at hapless governors too jittery to stand up against daredevil dictatorship,” he said.
The PDP chieftain also claimed that the party had abandoned loyalists in Rivers State, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, during political woes. He also dismissed the zoning action as hypocritical, adding that Wike opposed zoning in 2022 and proceeded to seek the vice-president seat under a northerner candidate.
Declaring the pact a “done deal” for Tinubu, Momodu said:
“The geniuses must have the courage to accept that Tinubu shall be the common candidate of APC and PDP in 2027. Love him or hate him, you always know where Wike is, however absurd or ridiculous. No Jupiter can prevent him from employing PDP infrastructure for Tinubu.”
He dismissed rumors that the zoning would pave the way for southern possibilities such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, or Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, calling them “blatant lies from the pit of hell.”
Momodu called out the party’s enforcement of zoning rules in a seemingly arbitrary manner, citing past instances where the rule was broken, such as Jonathan’s succession following Yar’Adua’s death and Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023.
The truth cannot be discriminatory,” he concluded.
