At the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Donald J. Trump was awarded the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize by Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, in a ceremony held prior to the match-ups being drawn.
Infantino presented Trump with a gold trophy, commemorative medal, and certificate, praising his actions in promoting global peace and unity.
In his acceptance remarks, Trump described the honour as “one of the greatest of my life,” claiming his diplomatic interventions saved “millions and millions” of lives and helped resolve several international conflicts.
FIFA has said the Peace Prize honours “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace” and aims to recognise individuals who unite people around the world through their leadership and deeds.
Although the prize is newly established announced in November 2025 and its selection criteria have drawn criticism from human-rights groups and some within FIFA’s own ranks, the awarding marks a clear shift for the football body into acknowledging global diplomacy beyond the pitch.
