Edo State administration, in partnership with Mariam Ashley Yusuf (MAY) Foundation, has launched a state-wide awareness campaign against human trafficking, irregular migration, sexual exploitation, and drug abuse among young people.
The initiative, launched at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, was in accordance with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda and was graced by students, teachers, corps members, parents, unions, and influential agencies, including the Edo State Migration Agency, NAPTIP, IOM, NDLEA, the Nigeria Police, and community representatives.
MAY Foundation founder Ambassador Mariam Ashley Yusuf described the effort as a community action to protect the future and honor of Nigerian youths. She also read an excerpt from her book Stolen Dream: A Nigerian Girl’s Journey through Sex Trafficking, which places the broader crisis of exploitation in the limelight.
Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, officially launched the campaign, once again affirming that education must shape a responsible citizen and guard the future of the Edo child.
Representing the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani reaffirmed that prevention starts with awareness in schools, while the pupils appreciated the empowerment gained from interactive sessions and discussions.
Stakeholders pledged to take the campaign into schools and communities in order to spread its impact beyond classrooms.
