The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has been temporarily closed after an aircraft, with the registration number 5N-BZN, developed a nose-landing gear fault while touching down on Runway 08 and became stuck on the runway.
In a statement issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, all passengers and crew on board were safely disembarked and transported to the terminal with the use of apron buses.
Agbebire explained that the incident occurred at about 7:10pm on Thursday, which immediately mobilized emergency response teams to the area to ensure passenger safety and secure the airfield. Emergency units from the FAAN stationed fire trucks and medical personnel at the scene in line with procedures.
He said that by 7:48pm, evacuation was completed without injuries and that FAAN rescue and firefighting teams were in control of the aircraft and surroundings.
The Authority, Agbebire said, will, therefore, not speculate at this point but will give an update as investigations unfold. He added that FAAN’s main consideration at this time remains the safety of airport users and the aircraft operator, as well as full support for the investigators. He further explained that FAAN is working with the NCAA and the NSIB to ensure the incident is reviewed, adding that further updates will be provided as verified information is made available.
