Federal Judge Orders Medical Evaluation for Detained Biafra Leader Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu

A federal court in Abuja has stepped in to address growing concerns about Nnamdi Kanu‘s health, ordering Nigeria’s top medical body to urgently assess the detained Biafran leader’s condition.

Justice James Omotosho made the ruling amid mounting pressure from Kanu’s legal team, who have been battling with authorities over claims that their client’s health is seriously declining behind bars.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) president now has just eight days to assemble a high-level medical team and deliver a comprehensive health report.

This evaluation will determine whether Kanu needs to be moved from his current detention facility to the National Hospital for proper treatment.

The urgency is clear – Justice Omotosho isn’t taking any chances with the controversial leader’s wellbeing.

The judge laid out specific requirements for the assessment team:

  • Between 8 to 10 NMA members must participate
  • A cardiologist and neurologist must be included
  • The Chief Medical Director of National Hospital will join the panel
  • The team has full access to any hospital across Nigeria for their evaluation

The medical committee’s first stop will be the Department of State Services (DSS) hospital, where they’ll determine if the facility can adequately handle Kanu’s medical needs.

This inspection could prove crucial in deciding his immediate future.

For months, Kanu’s lawyers have been locked in disputes with DSS officials over his deteriorating health condition.

The court’s intervention suggests these concerns have reached a critical point that demands independent medical oversight.
