A recent visit to Ghana was made by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in response to demands for the deportation of Nigerians.
Over the weekend, a protest was staged by a group of Ghanaian traders from a local retail market. The deportation of Nigerians was demanded, with allegations that Nigerian behavior did not align with Ghanaian values. Placards were carried, and accusations were made that Nigerians were causing problems and were involved in criminal activities.
After a meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister spoke to newsmen. It was stated by her that the viral videos calling for the deportation of Nigerians had caused anxiety, and her visit was necessitated for a firsthand assessment of the situation.
“Since I arrived, people have not been seen burning tires in the streets or carrying placards everywhere calling for Nigerians to be deported. This shows that the Ghanaian government and the president have stepped up to the situation. It would be said that there is no cause for alarm, the situation is being handled effectively, and stakeholders will continue to be engaged,” the Minister said.
On his part, the Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, stated that the matter was being addressed by the ministry and that some leaders of the Nigerian community had been met with.
“It will be ensured by the Ghanaian government that everyone in the country, citizens and non-citizens, is protected,” he said.
