A visitation panel from the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria has carried out an accreditation exercise at the Department of Health Information Management, Iconic Open University.
The university’s registrar, Dr. Muhammad Sanusi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the team assessed the programme to ascertain whether it meets professional standards to produce competent Bachelor of Health Information Management graduates qualified to practice in the field.
He said that the panel and the university management, together with the staff of the department, showed strong commitment to achieving the desired outcomes of the accreditation process. Dr. Sanusi reassured the gathering of the institution’s commitment to meeting regulatory benchmarks for sustaining excellence in the B.HIM program, among others.
The health program is one of the several accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the university.
The visit by HRORBN comes in the wake of a similar exercise carried out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. In August, NUC also granted Iconic Open University’s request for the commencement of several postgraduate programmes, including Master of Public Health and Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, designed to bolster professional capacity in the nation’s health sector.
Dr. Sanusi concluded that these accreditations confirm the university’s compliance with strict academic standards and that it is preparing students to meet changing labour market demands. The Iconic Open University is Nigeria’s first private open and distance learning institution, with study centres across the country and beyond.
