Nigeria’s electoral commission has warned citizens against registering to vote multiple times, saying anyone caught doing so will be completely removed from the voter register.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued the warning ahead of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise starting August 18.
Mohammed Sadiq, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Plateau State, made the announcement during a stakeholder meeting about the nationwide registration resumption.
Sadiq emphasized that while voter registration is both a right and civic duty, only properly registered citizens will be allowed to vote.
He urged all eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above who haven’t registered yet to participate in the exercise and get their Permanent Voter Cards.
“Any attempt to engage in such an act may lead to registrants being completely delisted from the register,” Sadiq said about multiple registrations.
The registration will start with an online platform available 24/7 at www.crv.inecnigeria.org.
The exercise will handle new registrations, PVC collection or transfers, and replacement of lost or damaged cards.
Sadiq said INEC has put measures in place to prevent non-Nigerians from registering.
He also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, political parties, and other community leaders to help educate eligible citizens about the importance of participating in voter registration.
The commissioner stressed that every vote matters in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
