Lagos Assembly Demands Justice for Dispatch Rider Killed by NURTW Member

National Assembly

Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned the killing of a dispatch rider who was allegedly beaten to death by National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) member, Shamsideen Adio, and his gang at Lagos Island.

Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, described the act as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman and heartbreaking,” and called for immediate prosecution of all parties involved.

The assault, which was on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Tapa Street, Lagos Island, was recorded in explicit videos that circulated on the internet. The videos showed Adio hammering the dispatch rider repeatedly, even after he lost consciousness, and bystanders trying to revive him.

Adedeji characterized the brutality as the sign of a disregard for human life. “We can only try to imagine a dispatch rider who went home to earn a living not returning because somebody who thinks he’s above the law took his life,” he said.

He commended the Lagos State Police Command for its prompt arrest of the suspected mastermind but urged authorities to ensure that the culprit was prosecuted. “Lagosians want to see that the perpetrators face the legal ramification of their action. No individual has the right to end the life of any other person irrespective of who the person is,” he said.

The lawmaker also called on the leadership of the NURTW, represented by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio and dissociate the union from the offense until investigations by the police are complete. He appealed to the union to re-educate members in respect for human rights, discipline, and lawful behavior.

Adedeji concluded that justice to the killed rider would not only seal the file of the bereaved family but also send out a strong warning against impunity.
